Art in a Crazy Time

Today is Thursday March 19, 2020. I am in the ArtSpark School studio preparing classes and creative activities for online learning (and distraction from all the news of social distancing and quarantines.)

Meanwhile I am alone in the studio that is usually so lively at this time of day. I have cleaned and stored away most of the supplies we used for winter classes.  Thank goodness I was able to get some good cleaning supplies before the rush to stockpile.

I thought I’d post some thoughts on being creative in this stressful time. I find drawing relaxing and meditative. I hope to share some activities, exercises and tutorials to help you feel comfortable drawing as a way to escape our current situation, even if only for a few minutes a day. I’ll put some ideas here but also check out daily updates on social media.

Jon Burgerman has a fantastic book for kids It’s Great to Create and also does some silly drawing videos like this one BLOBS

Take a virtual museum tour  Draw your own art in the style of one of the famous artists whose work is on display.

Build a Lego object from only 10 bricks. Then draw what you built…this is a great way to practice drawing a simple shape in perspective or from a different angle (top view or from the edges or under the table)

Challenge yourself to draw using a single line!  Manesh Pendam Art draws simple animals and figures in marker using only one continuous line. Try it!

Please check out our Instagram (artsparkschool) and @artsparkschool on Facebook. I will be putting daily “What To Draw” challenges and other creativity ideas to help us get through this crazy time.
